Jointly developed by M HKA and the KU Leuven, this long-term, interdisciplinary research project focuses on a specific, yet complex body of work; multifaceted and variably installable, unfinished and open-ended: Ship of Fools / The Dockers' Museum (2010-2013) by artist and theorist Allan Sekula (1951-2013). Informed by the research of the team members, the project continues to evolve in a succession of research outputs, such as this digital platform.

Allan Sekula

The Forgotten Space, 2010
Film , 113 min
DCP, Digibeta, DV CAM, colour / black & white

Allan Sekula is strongly influenced by the specifically American tradition of socially engaged photography. The film "The Forgotten Space" incorporates a strong local colour: as part of its ongoing investigation of the representation of labor in and outside the social-realist tradition Sekula takes the sculptural work of Belgian artist Constantin Meunier as a starting point while the film begins and ends in Doel (a small port town near Antwerp).
